The recalled Philips VENTILATORS have been linked to an increased risk of cancer

In the summer of 2021, Dutch medical giant Philips announced a recall of 3.4 million CPAP machines that are used for sleep apnea. CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure and the company recalled machines sold before April 2021. The recall only impacted a device if it was sold in the United States. The CPAP machine is a mechanical ventilator and can help to improve the user’s quality of sleep.

The recalled units are made with a foam that could produce a carcinogenic gas. Carcinogens are chemicals that may cause cancer. Instead of a massive recall, Philips changed the foam used.

Users of this machine may be entitled to compensation for injuries linked to the sound abatement foam.

Risks Of Breathing Polyester-Based Polyurethane (PE-PUR) foam include

    Throat Cancer

    Lung Cancer

    Liver Cancer

    Liver Injury / Failure

    Intestinal cancer

    Kidney Cancer

    Kidney Injury / Failure

    Asthma

The US Food and Drug Administration mentioned the purpose of the recall was to reduce the risks of using the sound abatement foam component of the device.

Philips stated there was also a quality issue related to the DreamStation CPAP Model 2 not related to the foam used.

Why The Recall On The Philips Respironics CPAP MACHINE?

For a medical device like the Philips CPAP machine to be linked to cancer is cause for alarm. The foam in this machine is principally for noise reduction to lessen its impact on the user’s sleep.

The foam used in the CPAP and BiPAP machine models breaks down. This degradation over time can cause foam particles to enter the lungs.

The foam may also produce a toxic gas that can be inhaled by the user.

Issues Presented By The Affected Ventilator Devices May Include

    • Foam dust entering the lungs, causing an increased likelihood of cancer
    • Polyester polyurethane foam breaking down, entering the bloodstream, and impacting various organs

    Problems With The Toxic Outgas

Philips states the chemicals can cause airway inflammation. This has the capacity to worsen breathing issues already prevalent in those using a CPAP machine.

The gases consumers have been exposed to include:

    • Dimethyl diazene which also goes by azomethan and CH3N.
    • Phenol which is also known as carbolic acid.

How Harmful Are The Chemicals In The Ventilator Devices?

Dimethyl diazene, even in low doses, can cause damage to the kidneys and liver as the body filters out these chemical through the organs.

Phenol can cause chemical burns when not treated urgently. A lung injury can be difficult to recover from, if possible at all.
